This amazing dish originated in North Korea, and is now a very popular meal in South Korea. The original recipe included beef grilled on a skewer, but now is often prepared in a pan instead. Bulgogi is also called yeomjeok (염적), which means “fire meat”. This dish is served in many barbecue restaurants all over Korea. You can even find bulgogi flavored fast-food burgers which sounds amazing. and I hope I get to try one someday!
You can use any type of beef, but tenderloin or sirloin cut in thin slices are typical. I used ground beef in this recipe since because that is what I had on hand, and it does not require any marination. If you use beef tenderloin, make sure that you marinate the meat for at least 30 minutes prior (this will enhance it’s flavor and tenderness). Bulgogi can be eaten at any time of the year, but most families in Korea enjoy grilling on special occasions or in social settings. While grilled bulgogi is traditional and treasured, the pan cooked alternative has become very popular.
